Chance Cota will play for the first time this season.
Oct. 20, 2006
Utah will travel to San Diego to compete in the Barona Cup on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 23-24). Featured this week will be golfers Steven Broker, Nick Carter, Chance Cota, Chris Gresh and Nicholas Larson. The tournament will be the Utes' final tournament of the 2006 fall campaign.
Last year the Utes recorded rounds of 286, 287 and 279 to finish in 12th place. Dustin Pimm led the Utes at nine-under-par, placing 11th.
19 teams will compete in this year's Cup, including Mountain West schools Colorado State, San Diego State and Wyoming. Regional rivals Fresno State and Nevada will also compete.
LOOKING BACK ON THE DISTRICT 7 SHOOTOUT:
Utah fired rounds of 289, 278 and 287 to finish at two-over-par and tied for seventh place. The Utes were led by Nic Larson who finished seven-under-par to finish tied for seventh place. Chris Gresh followed Larson at three-under-par, ending the tournament tied for 16th.
Standout junior Dustin Pimm did not compete in the District 7 Shootout due to a bulging disk, and will miss the Barona Cup as well. Coaches will work this winter to prepare Pimm for the spring. Dustin ends his fall season with a stroke average of 70.11 ... Pimm's injury has prompted Ute coaches to pull Chance Cota out of his redshirt season to help bolster the roster ... Utah started the fall ranked 149th in the nation and is currently ranked 61st ... Nicholas Larson is 10th in the Mountain West in stroke average at 71.75 ... The Utes will begin the spring season on February 21, 2007 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu, Hawaii.
QUOTING COACH MCCRACKEN:
"We've had a pretty good fall, and the season has gone well overall," says coach McCracken. " We've got to be pleased with how we've moved up in the rankings, even though we've played the past couple tournaments without Dustin."
