COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman Joe Webber's two-under-par 70 tied for the second-lowest second-round score of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational and led the University of Utah golf team to a 13th-place standing after the first day of its 2008-09 debut Saturday on the blue course of the Eisenhower Golf Club.
The Utes totaled 594 during the first two rounds of the tournament with a first-round score of 291 strokes then needed 303 strokes to complete the second round.
Webber, a Sandy, Utah, native and Alta High School graduate, led the way for the Utes by shooing a four-over-par 76 in the first round for a two-over-par total of 146 strokes and tied for 22nd place overall. Sophomore Chase Hite shot an opening-round 70 but followed it with a score of 78 in the second round to total 148 to tie for 40th place.
Senior Chance Cota tied for 62nd place with a two-round total of 152 after a first-round 73 then a 79 in the second. Jeff Kitches finished just one stroke behind Cota and stands in a 68th-place tie after the first 36 holes. Kaleb Mahanes was the last Ute to score in the meet and tied for 78th place with a two-round total of 155 (79-76).
Colorado State and UNLV are tied for first place after the first day with two-round totals of 560 strokes apiece. CSU's Bryce Hanstad owns the meet's top individual score at 138 (70-68).
The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitation concludes with one round tomorrow on the par-72, 7,301-yard blue course at the Eisenhower Golf Club.
