Utah Golf Finishes Fifth At Cowboy Classic

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The University of Utah men's golf team finished fifth at the University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic. The Utes shot a three-round score of 854 (+14) at the 70-par Talking Stick North Golf Course.

Junior Steve Newren claimed the individual tournament title, finishing three-under par with a score of 207. Newren shot a 68 (-2) in the first round, 69 (-1) in the second round and a even par 70 in the final round to edge out Trent Rommann of UTEP and Eric Bailey of Wyoming who tied for second place at two-under par.

Freshman Dustin Pimm finished two strokes behind Newren at 209 (-1), posting a 67 (-3) in the final round after shooting a 73 and 69 in the first and second rounds respectively. Pimm tied for fourth place overall.

Chris Gresh shot a three-round score of 219 (+9), one stroke ahead of senior Ashdon Woods (220). Gresh and Woods both shot a four-over par 74 in the final round to finish tied for 47th and 54th place respectively.

Freshman Nick Carter rounds out the squad with a score of 222 (+12). Carter struggled in the first round, shooting a seven-over par before improving in the final two rounds with scores of 72 (+2) and 73 (+3) respectively to place tied for 68th.

Next up the Utes compete in the BYU Cougar Classic April 22-23 at the Riverside Country Club.
