Utah's Alex Smith, a Heisman Trophy, All-America and Mountain West Player of the Year candidate, exploded on to the conference and national scene as a sophomore last year when he led Utah to a 10-2 record, its first outright conference championship in 46 years and a Liberty Bowl victory over Southern Mississippi. Called "the best quarterback in the nation" by Utah Head Coach Urban Meyer, Smith is an exceptionally smart player with a big arm, who is an elusive, tough runner and makes good decisions. His touchdown to interception ratio ranked No. 2 in the nation last year (5:1) and he's on target for similar success this fall. Just 20 years old, he has already received his bachelor's degree in economics (in two years), and is pursuing a master's degree in econ.
