Alex Smith wins The Sporting News' top player honor. |

SALT LAKE CITY -
The national awards continue to pile up for Utah quarterback Alex Smith, who was named today as The Sporting News Player of the Year. Smith is the first Ute ever to win the award.
The Sporting News also honored Utah sophomore wide receiver Steve Savoy and freshman cornerback Ryan Smith. Savoy, a first-team all-Mountain West Conference honoree, is averaging 81.0 receiving yards per game and has a league-best 11 touchdown receptions. He also rushed for 307 yards and six touchdowns and was the leading scorer in the MWC (11th in the nation)--averaging 9.3 points per game. Ryan Smith made The Sporting News Freshman All-America second team. He has started all 11 games at right corner this season and has 40 tackles and five pass break-ups.
TSN's National Player of the Year award is the latest in a long string of honors for Alex Smith, who will be at the Home Depot Football Awards in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday, Dec. 9 as a Davey O'Brien finalist. A finalist for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year and the Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Year, Smith was also recently named the ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Football All-American of the Year.
Smith will learn on Dec. 8 if he is a Heisman Trophy finalist. If so, he will fly from Orlando to New York City on Dec. 10 and participate in the Live Heisman Announcement on Dec. 11.
