CULVER CITY, Calif. -
Utah was picked to finish fifth in the Pac-12 Conference South Division in a poll of media members who cover the league. The poll was announced at the annual Pac-12 Media Day in the Sony Studios' lot, which was attended by head coach Kyle Whittingham, tight end Jake Murphy and defensive end Trevor Reilly.
The media's prediction for the 2013 South Division race matched exactly how the teams finished a year ago, with UCLA picked to win the division, followed by Arizona State, USC, Arizona, Utah and Colorado.
Utah, which returns just 13 starters from last year's 5-7 team (3-6 Pac-12), became the only football staff in the country with two National Coach of the Year selections when Kyle Whittingham hired Dennis Erickson as co-offensive coordinator (with Brian Johnson). Whittingham won the award in 2008 and Erickson won it in 2000.
Whittingham talked about how he expects the Utes to rebound from their first losing season in a decade and the high hopes he has at quarterback and other positions at the media day. Click Here to see what he has to say about this year's team.
Utah associate sports information director Brooke Frederickson chronicled the day on Instagram.

The 2013 Pac-12 Championship Football Game will take place Saturday, December 7 at 4:45 p.m. or 5 p.m. PT and telecast to a national audience on ESPN or ABC. The Championship game will match the winner of the North Division vs. the winner of the South Division. The game will be played on the campus of the division winner with the best overall conference record. The winner of the Pac-12 Championship will earn the league's automatic BCS berth.
POLL NOTES: Preseason media poll has correctly picked the Conference champion 28 of 52 times and has been very accurate of late, correctly identifying the Conference champion in 11 of the last 13 years ... Oregon is picked to win the league for the third time in four years, and fourth overall (2001, 2010, 2011, 2013). The prognosticators were correct the first three times they slotted the Ducks first.
