July 21, 2009
LAS VEGAS - The Utah football team was picked to finish third in the 2009 Mountain West Conference preseason media poll, released today at the annual MWC Football Preview. The Utes, who are coming off a 13-0 season in 2008, received 179 points and three first-place votes.
The defending Sugar Bowl champion Utes placed five players on the 2009 preseason All-MWC team. Senior linebacker Stevenson Sylvester was one of just three unanimous selections and senior offensive lineman Zane Beadles, Utah's only returning 2008 first-team all-conference player, was picked to repeat. Others named to the preseason team include senior running back Matt Asiata, senior defensive lineman Koa Misi, and senior defensive back Robert Johnson.
The Utes return 11 starters from 2008: four on offense and seven on defense. Along with Beadles, other returning Utes who received all-league honors a year ago are Misi and Sylvester - both second-team picks - and honorable mention kick returner David Reed, linebacker Mike Wright and offensive lineman Zane Taylor.
