Utah quarterback Alex Smith, has been selected to the preseason watch list for the 2004 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, given annually to the nation's top college quarterback.
The O'Brien Award is the oldest and most prestigious award in the country for college quarterbacks and its voters come from a committee comprised of nationally known sportswriters, commentators and other members of the media.
Smith is one of 42 players nationwide named to the watch list. As a sophomore last fall, Smith assumed the starting duties three games into the season and went 9-1. The only three-time Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week in 2003, Smith was named to the all-MWC second team. He passed for 2,247 yards while completing 173 of 266 pass attempts. He threw 15 touchdown passes and just three interceptions, placing him second in the nation in touchdown to interception ratio (5:1). He ranked No. 12 in the nation in pass efficiency (152.35). Smith was also Utah's second-leading rusher, carrying the ball 149 times for 452 yards and 5 touchdowns.
