SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah has garnered a No. 15 preseason ranking from Lindy's Sports Annuals, which released its 2006 National College Football Preview recently.
The publication proclaims that Utah is "this season's designated BCS buster." Lindy's also says the Utes "are on the verge of becoming BCS regulars."
In addition to the national ranking, Lindy's predicts Utah to win the Mountain West Conference.
In its preseason awards list, the publication has named Eric Weddle as a preseason all-MWC performer and the preseason MWC Defensive Player of the Year. Other first-team preseason all-MWC selections by Lindy's are wide receiver Brian Hernandez, offensive lineman Tavo Tupola, defensive lineman Kelly Talavou and defensive back/linebacker Casey Evans.
Lindy's also recognized wide receiver/kick returner Brent Casteel as a second-team preseason all-MWC selection as an all-purpose player.
In addition to its all-conference teams, Lindy's lists Weddle at No. 3 among the MWC's top 10 NFL prospects. The magazine tabs Weddle as the MWC's best cover man and the fifth best safety in the nation. Quarterback Brett Ratliff was named the MWC's "coolest in the clutch."
Utah is also ranked as having the 10th best defensive secondary in the country.
The Utes open the 2006 campaign Sept. 2 with a road trip to face UCLA at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
