SALT LAKE CITY - The Sporting News College Football Yearbook has ranked Utah No. 25 in its preseason poll and picked the Utes to win the Mountain West Conference championship in Kyle Whittingham's first season as head coach.
Utah is coming off a 12-0 season in 2004 in which it won the Fiesta Bowl and captured its second consecutive Mountain West Conference championship.
The Sporting News also recognized senior Jesse Boone a the 19th-best center in the nation, senior Steve Fifita as the 10th-best defensive tackle, senior Spencer Toone at the 13th-best inside linebacker and the preseason MWC defensive player of the year, and junior Eric Weddle as the 10th-best strong safety.
Utah opens its 2005 season against Arizona on Sept. 2 at 6:00 p.m. (MDT) in Rice-Eccles Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN.
