Ute Football Team Is In Its Second Week Of Spring Camp - The Official Athletic Site of the University of Utah

WEEK TWO OF SPRING CAMP

The Utes, in their second full week of spring drills, will hold a tackle practice on Tuesday, a no-tackle practice on Thursday and a scrimmage on Saturday. All practices and scrimmages in the spring are open to the public. This Saturday's scrimmage is scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon in Rice-Eccles Stadium.

WHERE ARE THEY?

Practice times and locations are dependent on the weather conditions. If the practice fields are playable, week day practices will be held there. The scrimmage on April 16 will also be held on the practice fields. If the practice fields are soggy or otherwise unplayable during the week, practice will be moved to the stadium. If there is a downpour or snow on the Rice-Eccles Stadium turf, practice will be moved into the Spence Eccles Field House. The scrimmage on April 9 and the Red-White game on April 23 will be held in the stadium. Please check with the sports information office at 581-3511 for daily updates.

SPRING NOTES

Injuries from the first week of ball include running back Mike Liti (shoulder) and h-back Brent Casteel (knee). Liti has a sprain and should return in a week or two. Casteel will have arthroscopic surgery on April 4 and could return to action before the conclusion of spring ball ...Utah held a 65-play situational type scrimmage on April 2 and will hold a full-scale, 85-95-play scrimmage on April 9 ... Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Robert Conley has been so impressive in the early part of spring ball that he has moved into the starting role at right guard, where quite a battle is shaping up between he, Eric Pettit and Paul Soliai ... In an effort to get the best 11 players on the field, all-conference defensive line candidate Marquess Ledbetter has moved from open end to end and sophomore Martail Burnett is now the starter--rather than the backup--at open end. Things will probably stay like that at least until the end of spring and the positions will be re-evaluated in the fall ... Sophomore receiver Thomas Huff, the back-up at Z receiver, is having a standout spring and is now the No. 3 receiver overall behind Travis LaTendresse and John Madsen ... Senior Kite Afeaki has moved ahead of junior Kelly Talavou at nose guard.

MWC FOOTBALL PREVIEW

The media portion of the Mountain West Conference Football Preview will be held July 18-19 in San Diego at the Coronado Island Marriott. Commissioner Craig Thompson will address the gathering on July 18 from 10-11 a.m., followed by a session on either bowl games or instant replay. The coach and player interviews will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will continue on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

WHITTINGHAM SAYS

"I was very pleased with our first five days of practice. We are where we want to be at this time. Brian Johnson is picking things up more quickly than we anticipated and both our offensive and defensive execution are good for this point in the spring. We have installed the majority of our offense and defense. We have been identifying playmakers and some who have stood out on offense are Darryl Poston, Travis LaTendresse, John Madsen and Thomas Huff. Our scrimmage this Saturday will be partly situational but we'll also move the ball down the field."
