Two and a half months after finishing a 10-3 season with a Poinsettia Bowl victory over Cal, the Ute football team will begin preparing for the 2010 season with its annual spring camp.
Practices, which are open to the public, begin on Tuesday, Mar. 9 with a no-pads practice from 3-5 p.m. Utah will take advantage of the 15 practice days permissible by the NCAA, including two scrimmages and the Red-White game on April 17.
Five players will sit out of spring ball to mend injuries. They are: running back Matt Asiata (knee), offensive lineman Sam Brenner (foot), running back Beau Burton (foot), defensive end Derrick Shelby (knee) and wide receiver Shaky Smithson (shoulder). All are expected to be full strength by summer.
Returning for the Utes from last year's squad are 14 starters (8 offense, 4 defense, 2 kickers), 48 lettermen and six all-conference players. Running back Eddie Wide is Utah's only first-team all-league returner. He is joined by second-team honorees Caleb Schlauderaff and Zane Taylor -- both offensive linemen--as well as honorable mention choices Joe Phillips (kicker), Sealver Siliga (defensive line) and Sean Sellwood (punter).
Coaching changes that will be implemented in spring ball include the addition of 2009 Sugar Bowl MVP Brian Johnson as the quarterbacks coach. Receivers coach Aaron Roderick has been elevated to co-offensive coordinator--a title he shares with Dave Schramm. Schramm takes over the tight ends, while Jay Hill will oversee the cornerbacks.
