ESPN.com tabbed Alex Smith as the MWC's best returning QB. |
Feb. 18, 2004
SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah football team enjoyed unprecedented success in 2003 and ESPN.com predicts that even better things are ahead for the Utes next fall. ESPN.com reporter Ivan Maisel awarded Utah a No. 14 preseason ranking in his Jan. 9 story on ESPN.com's College Football site.
It is the highest preseason ranking ever for the Utah football team by a major news outlet and it comes on the heels of a school record-tying 10-2 mark, an outright conference championship and a Liberty Bowl victory in 2003.
Maisel likes the Utes for several reasons, including the track record of second-year Ute head coach Urban Meyer and junior-to-be quarterback Alex Smith, whom he calls "the best returning quarterback in the Mountain West Conference."
The ESPN.com Top 25 preseason poll, as of Jan. 9, follows:
1. USC 2. LSU 3. Oklahoma 4. Georgia 5. Miami 6. Florida State 7. Michigan 8. Maryland 9. Texas 10. Iowa 11. California 12. West Virginia 13. Clemson 14. Utah 15. Ohio State 16. Oregon State 17. Tennessee 18. Auburn 19. Missouri 20. Virginia 21. Florida 22. Nebraska 23. Toledo 24. Purdue 25. Colorado
