Having successfully transitioned from law practice to football practice, Sharrieff Shah is in his second year coaching Utah's cornerbacks. Shah, a Salt Lake City attorney for 11 years, became Utah's cornerbacks coach in February of 2012.
His corners accounted for half of Utah's interceptions last fall and had a nose for the ball--recovering three fumbles and recording 10 tackles for loss and four sacks.
Shah has stayed closely tethered to the game since his days as a three-year Ute starter and all-Western Athletic Conference safety in the early 1990s.
From 1996-2002, he was certified as an agent through the National Football League's Player Association (NFLPA) and trained players for the NFL combine. From 2000-11, he was the sideline reporter for ESPN 700, Utah's flagship radio station. Before that, he spent three years as a sideline analyst for local television stations KUTV and KJZZ in their Ute broadcasts.
As an NFL agent, he negotiated multi-million dollar contracts and represented players in the NFL, CFL and NFL Europe. Among his clients was his brother Karim Abdul Jabbar (now known as Abdul Karim-Al Jabbar), an NFL running back for the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts from 1996-2000.
From 2006 until his appointment as Utah's cornerbacks coach, Shah was a trial attorney with Siegfried & Jensen, the largest personal injury law firm in the state of Utah. He specialized in medical malpractice and catastrophic automobile accidents. Before that, he was a commercial litigator with Parsons, Behle & Latimer from 2001-06.
Shah, who earned a bachelor's (1993), master's (1995) and Juris Doctorate (2001) from the University of Utah, lettered four years at Utah, starting at strong safety from 1990-92. His senior season was cut short after three games due to a career-ending neck injury.
A team captain, Shah was named the Sports Illustrated National Defensive Player of the Week, as well as WAC Player of the Week, in Utah's 1991 win over Oregon State. His 12 total tackles in that game included five tackles for a loss of 31 yards, four sacks (19 yards) and two forced fumbles.

Playing Career
Shah was an honorable mention all-WAC safety in 1991 and 1992 before his career was ended by a neck injury three games into his senior season in 1993. Shah, a team captain, still holds the school record for sacks in a game (4) and ranks second all-time at Utah in tackles for loss in game (5) and tackles for loss yards in a game (31). He lettered from 1990-93, starting his first three seasons. Shah also ran indoor track for Utah competing in the 60-yard dash and long jump from 1990-92. He qualified and competed in the WAC Indoor Championships all three years.
