Steve Mathis, a successful local entrepreneur, offered his services as an administrative assistant when Kyle Whittingham became Utah's head coach in 2005. Now in his third year in the position, Mathis primarily assists the defensive coaches. His assignments encompass office duties, scout team cards at practice and game day charting.
Mathis, who has owned Abbey Carpets for the last 25 years, was named Businessman of the Year from 2003-05. He serves on numerous business advisory boards and councils.
Mathis' previous football experience includes three years as a high school assistant coach and seven years coaching little league. He was an assistant coach at Alta High School in Salt Lake City from 2002-04. He served five years as President of the Alta Ute League and is currently on the Ute Conference executive board. As head coach of the Alta Ute Conference eighth and ninth grade teams, Mathis' teams won five state titles and a National Youth Football League championship.
Mathis graduated from Snow College, where he competed for the basketball team. He then attended Weber State and worked as an athletics trainer.
The Salt Lake City native is married to the former Suzanne Atencio. Their children are J.D., Nic, Tim, Cassandra, Chandra and Emma.
