Brian Johnson, the winningest quarterback in Utah football history and MVP of the 2009 Sugar Bowl, was named Utah's offensive coordinator on Feb. 2, 2011 at age 24. Johnson, who turned 25 two weeks later, is the youngest FBS coordinator in the nation (offensive or defensive).
The Baytown, Texas, native is accustomed playing a key role for the Utes at an unusually young age. Just 16 when he signed a National Letter of Intent in 2004, Johnson went on to play in 10 games as a true freshman, backing up Heisman Trophy finalist Alex Smith during Utah's 12-0 Fiesta Bowl championship season.
The next spring, he became Utah's starting quarterback as a 17-year-old. In January 2010, a year after breaking the school record for wins by a starting quarterback (he was 26-7 in his career), Johnson accepted a position as Utah's quarterbacks coach.
While Johnson's fast ascension to an NCAA FBS coordinator's role is rare, he was frequently acknowledged by the coaching staff for assisting with the game plan and play-calling as the starting quarterback, especially during Utah's 13-0, Sugar Bowl championship run his senior year.
"Brian is a leader and a special coaching talent, just as he was a special player, and he is the right person to lead our offense," said Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham when announcing his new offensive coordinator.
Johnson's first two seasons as the quarterbacks coach were defined by his ability to adjust the game plan after the loss of starter Jordan Wynn to injury. Both seasons, Utah recovered to earn a bowl bid--the Las Vegas Bowl in 2010 and the Sun Bowl in 2011 (where playing with first-year backup Jon Hays at the helm, Utah beat Georgia Tech).
Johnson plans to restore the spread offense that the Utes ran during his playing career.

Playing Career
A three-year starter and four-time Academic All-Mountain West Conference honoree, Johnson went 26-7 as Utah's starting quarterback to set a school record for wins. He was the 2008 MWC Offensive Player of the Year and a two-time bowl MVP (2007 Poinsettia Bowl and 2009 Sugar Bowl). A finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and the Manning awards as a senior in 2008, Johnson captained Utah to the best record in school history (13-0) and a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama. He began his Ute career as a true freshman, playing in 10 games during Utah's 12-0 BCS-busting 2004 season. He started for the Utes in 2005, 2007 and 2008. He redshirted in 2006 while recovering from knee surgery.
