WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. - Utah senior forward Britton Johnsen, the 2001-02 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb on Wednesday in Salt Lake City. He is expected to be out at least 3-4 weeks and did not travel with the team to California for games against Pepperdine and San Diego this weekend.

Johnsen sustained the injury early in the first half of Utah's contest at Utah State on Tuesday night, but finished the game with 12 points in 34 minutes. The Murray, Utah, native was averaging 14.0 points and 6.8 rebounds through eight games this season, leading the team in both categories. He also had eight assists, six blocked shots and seven steals. Johnsen was one of 50 players named a preseason candidate for the John R. Wooden Award.
