Individual and Team Notes
Bachynski's Massive Night Leads Utes Against Idaho State
Bachynski racked up 22 points and 16 rebounds against Idaho State for his second double-double in his first three games as a Ute. He also had one assist, one block and one steal while playing 32 minutes.
Bachynski became the first Utah player this year to score 20 or more points and is the first Ute to grab 15 or more rebounds in a game since Luke Nevill had 15 against San Diego State in the MWC Tournament championship game on Mar. 14, 2009. Bachynski's 20-and-15 double-double is Utah's first since Nevill had 23 points and 15 boards against Wyoming in the semifinals of the same tournament.
Bachynski has led the squad or tied for the for team-high rebound honors in each of the first three games. He is currently averaging 11.0 rebounds per game, which ranks second in the Pac-12 Conference.
Loveridge Pulls Down Career-High 12 Boards vs. Bengals
Freshman forward Jordan Loveridge collected a career-high 12 rebounds against Idaho State, including four on the offensive glass. He also tied his career high with four assists while coming just three points shy of his second double-double. Loveridge is tied for 11th in the Pac-12 with 7.7 rebounds per game.
It was the second time this season that Loveridge and Bachynski both pulled down double-digit rebounds in the same game.
Martin Doing the Dirty Work
Martin is averaging 4.7 assists per contest to lead the Utah squad, while averaging 3.3 rebounds per game and 2.3 steals. He is also one of the team's top defenders and has shown a savvy ability to take charges. Against ISU, he tied for game-high honors with four assists after posting a career-high seven helpers in the Nov. 16 loss to Sacramento State. He also made a career-best four steals and collected a season-high seven rebounds against the Hornets.
Junior guard Glen Dean has scored double digits in all three of Utah's games this season, including 11 on Wednesday against Idaho State. Dean is averaging 12.3 points per game, second-most on the team.
Dean is tied for second in the Pac-12 with 2.7 3-pointers per game, while ranking seventh in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.7% (8-of-17). He also ranks 10th in free throw percentage at 81.8% (9-of-11) and is tied for ninth in minutes played at 33.0 per contest.
Washburn Looking to Become 35th Ute to Join 1,000-Point Club
Senior center Jason Washburn has scored 706 points in his 93 career games. With at least 28 games remaining, including the regular season and Pac-12 Tournament, Washburn must average 10.5 points per game for the remainder of the season to become the 35th Ute to hit the 1,000-point plateau. He is currently averaging 8.7 points per game after scoring at a career-best clip of 11.4 points per contest last year.
Through the first three games, Utah's freshman class has accouted for 35.3% of the team's scoring with 82 of the team's 232 points. Leading the freshmen are Loveridge (9.7 points per game) and Seymour (8.7), ranking third and fourth on the squad, respectively. Wing Dakarai Tucker is averaging 5.7 points per game as well.
Two other freshman made a significant impact in the season opener against Willamette, with guard Brandon Taylor posting six points, two rebounds, one assist and a steal, while forward Jeremy Olsen had four points, six boards and a block in just seven minutes.
Utah's freshmen are crashing the boards as well, combining to collect 48 of Utah's 130 total rebounds (37%). Loveridge is the top rebounding freshman with 7.7 boards per game, while Seymour is grabbing 3.0 per contest.
Bigs on the Boards
Head coach Larry Krystkowiak would like Utah's big men to maintain a pace of approximately one rebound every four minutes. This space will be devoted to tracking that stat throughout the season. Bachynski is currently averaging one rebound every 2.3 minutes while Loveridge is at 3.5. Washburn (4.1) is just off the pace while junior forward Renan Lenz is at 5.3.
Utah Hits 100-Point Mark for the First Time Since 1995
In the 104-47 victory against Willamette, the Utes hit the 100-point plateau for the first time since racking up 108 points in a victory over Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 27, 1995.
