SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team will take on Adams State in exhibition play at 7 p.m. MT Friday, Nov. 4, at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. This will be the team's final live-action tune-up before tipping off the 2011-12 season.
Utah and Adams State played a preseason exhibition game last year as well, with the Utes taking an 84-74 victory. Current senior Josh Watkins scored 22 points in the game, while junior Jason Washburn racked up 15 to go with seven rebounds and two blocks.
The Runnin' Utes are led by new head coach Larry Krystkowiak. Utah fans will see the return of four core players from last year's team in seniors David Foster and Watkins, along with juniors Chris Hines and Washburn. Utah has added 13 new players to its roster including seven transfers, five freshmen and a returned LDS missionary. Ten of the 13 players will be eligible to play immediately, while three must sit out due to NCAA transfer rules.
The transfers eligible to play immediately include juniors Dijon Farr (Indian Hills C.C.) and Cedric Martin (Lee College) as well as sophomores Javon Dawson (Gulf Coast C.C.) and Corbin Green (Snow College). Juniors Glen Dean (Eastern Washington), Aaron Dotson (LSU) and Alexander Ricketts (Simon Fraser) will be eligible in 2012-13.
Utah's five freshmen include wing George Matthews (Phoenix, Ariz.), guards Alex Mortensen (Sprinville, Utah), Anthony Odunsi (Fort Bend, Texas) and Kareem Storey (Baltimore, Md.) and forward Blake Wilkinson (Bountiful, Utah).
Redshirt junior guard Kyle Perkins returns to the squad after serving a two-year LDS mission at the California Ventura Mission. Perkins redshirted the 2008-09 season after transferring to Utah from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Adams State is an NCAA Division II member that competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Grizzlies are led by second-year head coach Louis Wilson. Their top returner is senior Marqus Richards, who averaged 14.8 points per game last season to go with 5.6 rebounds. He posted team-highs of 12 points and six boards in last year's exhibition game against the Utes.
Utah's official season-opener will be Monday, Nov. 14, as the Utes host San Diego Christian College at the Huntsman Center at 7 p.m.
