Utah Basketball All-Century Team Unveiled

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah has announced its 16-member All-Century Team for men's basketball. The announcement is part of Utah's celebration of its 100th season of intercollegiate men's basketball.

The All-Century Team was determined by fan voting. A committee of people with extensive knowledge of the Utah basketball program developed a list of 34 nominees. Fans were then allowed to vote on-line and in-person at the first three Runnin' Ute games this season.

Those votes were tallied and the top 16 vote-getters were named as members of the University of Utah Men's Basketball All-Century Team. The team is listed alphabetically below, along with the years each student-athlete played for the Utes:

Andrew Bogut - 2003-05
Jerry Chambers - 1963-66
Tom Chambers - 1977-81
Mike Doleac - 1994-98
Arnie Ferrin - 1943-48
Vern Gardner - 1945-49
Josh Grant - 1988-91/1992-93
Alex Jensen - 1994-95/1997-2000
Jeff Jonas - 1973-77
Jeff Judkins - 1974-78
Bill Kinner - 1932-36
Billy McGill - 1959-62
Andre Miller - 1995-99
Mike Newlin - 1968-71
Keith Van Horn - 1993-97
Danny Vranes - 1977-81

Below is a brief list of some of the accomplishments of each of the All-Century Team members:

Andrew Bogut
- Utah's only consensus National Player of the Year
- No. 1 selection in 2005 NBA Draft
- Led nation with 26 double-doubles in 2004-05
- Ranks 29th in all-time scoring at Utah after just two seasons

Jerry Chambers
- Ranks 18th in scoring all-time at Utah
- Ranks 6th all-time in field goal percentage
- First-round selection of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1966
- First-team All-WAC in 1966, Second-team in 1965

 

 

Tom Chambers
- Ranks 8th in scoring all-time at Utah
- Ranks 7th all-time in field goal percentage
- First-round selection of the San Diego Clippers in 1981
- First-team All-WAC in 1981, Second-team in 1979 and 1980

Mike Doleac
- Ranks 13th in scoring all-time at Utah; Ranks 8th all-time in rebounding
- Academic All-America selection in 1998
- First-round selection of the Orlando Magic in 1998
- First-team All-WAC in 1997 and 1998

Arnie Ferrin
- Four-time All-American (1944, 45, 47, 48)
- Consensus All-American in 1945
-One of seven Utes to have his jersey retired
- Drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1948

Vern Gardner
- Two-time All-American (1947, 48)
- Played on 1947 NIT Championship team
- One of seven Utes to have his jersey retired
- Drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors in 1949

Josh Grant
- Ranks 3rd all-time in scoring with 2,000 points
- Two-time WAC Player of the Year (1991, 1993)
- Two-time All-WAC 1st-Team (1991, 1993); 2nd-Team (1990)
- Drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1993

Alex Jensen
- 2000 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year (first-ever MWC POY)
- 1999 1st-Team All-WAC; 2000 1st-Team All-MWC
- Ranks 20th all-time in Utah career scoring with 1,279 points
- Ranks 6th all-time in Utah career rebounding with 896 boards

Jeff Jonas
- All-WAC 1st-Team in 1977; 2nd-Team in 1976
- Utah's all-time assist leader with 728
- 2nd-Team Academic All-American in 1977; Earned NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship in 1977
- Utah's only winner of Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award (outstanding senior 6-feet or shorter)
- Drafted by Philadelphia 76ers in 1977

Jeff Judkins
- Two-time 1st-Team All-WAC selection (1976, 77) - Ranks 6th all-time in Utah scoring with 1,740 points - Holds Utah single-season record for average minutes played (38.0 per game) - Drafted by Boston Celtics in 1978

Bill Kinner - Two-time All-American (1935, 1936)

Billy McGill - Ranks No. 2 in Utah career scoring (2,321 points); Ranks No. 1 in Utah career rebounding (1,106) - Owns Utah single-season (1,009) and single-game (60) records for scoring - Owns Utah single-season (430) and single-game (24) records for rebounding - Two-time All-American (1961, 62); Consensus choice in 1962 - One of seven Utes to have his jersey retired - Top NBA Overall selection in 1962 draft by the Chicago Zephyrs

Andre Miller - Two-time All-American (1998, 1999 - Consensus in 1999) - Ranks 10th all-time in scoring at Utah (1,618), No. 1 in steals (254) and No. 2 in assists (721) - One of seven Utes to have his jersey retired - Drafted in the first round by the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers in 1999

Mike Newlin - 1971 All-American
- All-WAC selection in 1971
- Two-time Academic All-American (1970, 1971)
- Drafted by the San Diego Rockets in 1971

Keith Van Horn
- Two-time All-American (1996, 1997 - Consensus in 1997)
- Utah's all-time leading scorer with 2,542 points; Utah's No. 2 rebounder all-time (1,074)
- Two-time WAC Player of the Year (1995, 1996); Also WAC Division Player of Year in 1997
- One of seven Utes to have his jersey retired
- No. 2 overall selection in the 1997 NBA Draft

Danny Vranes
- All-American in 1981
- Three-time All-WAC selection (1979, 80, 81); 2nd-Team in 1978
- No. 7 all-time in scoring (1,701); No. 5 in rebounding (951)
- One of seven Utes to have his jersey retired
- No. 5 overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft (Seattle SuperSonics)
