Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On handling the Texas State pressure
Their pressure took us out of some stuff but we didn’t commit that killer turnover like the first couple of games. Overall, I thought we did a real nice job of handling the basketball.
On how he wanted the team to be more aggressive in the second half
We have a long way to go. We were 2-for-10 from three in the first half and we stressed at halftime that we needed to get the ball inside. Jordan started driving and getting inside and again, we were adamant that that was something we needed to do in the second period.
On the play of Jason Washburn
Wash [Jason Washburn] was terrific. I’m proud of the way he played tonight. He really gave us a big lift. He has fit so nicely into his role on this team and settled us at times. Tonight, he had active hands on the defensive end and made plays offensively.
On areas he would like to improve
I think right now we are further ahead defensively. That’s not to say there are not areas of concern. Defensive rebounding for one thing kept them in the game. We also need to improve on getting back in transition, even though I thought we did a pretty nice job in that area tonight.
On what he thinks the difference was tonight as opposed to Wednesday
I hope so. We had some long film sessions and a spirited couple of practices these last two days. We have been harping focus on defense, but you need to do that and continue to play hard when faced with pressure on the other end. We grew up mentally tonight and we will continue to improve if we are strong and disciplined with the ball.
Senior Jason Washburn
I focused on being quick with the ball and not dribbling. That got us in trouble in the SMU game. I also tried to keep the ball high because I knew they’d try and dig the ball out. I started off well, fortunately, and my guards kept feeding me the ball.
There’s no limit to his game. He’s multi-dimensional in that he can stretch the floor and get to the rim. I love playing with him.
He is leading us out there on the floor, keeping us up. We’re just lucky to have him and he’s performing at an absolutely high level for us right now.
On what Coach Krystkowiak said at halftime
Coach told us we needed to attack the glass, offensively and defensively. He said that if we could get to the rim, we would score or draw fouls.
On improving overall and what he took away from the game
I think all the things that are still bugging us are fixable. It just feels great to get a road win. They really tested us tonight as far as ball movement and control.
