DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior center Luke Nevill scored 16 points and blocked three shots to lead Utah (3-1) to a 66-37 rout over Morgan State (2-3) on Saturday in the Glenn Wilkes Classic. With the win, the Runnin' Utes moved to 3-0 in the event and were crowned the tournament champions.
"This is the first championship that this group of guys has won," said Utah head coach Jim Boylen. "This is a big first step and I am very proud of my team. I came here to build a championship program and this is the first one."
The 7-foot-2 center Nevill, who also grabbed six rebounds, had his fourth straight double-figure scoring game. Saturday's effort, along with his double-double performances in the first two rounds of the tournament, was enough to earn Nevill 2008 Glenn Wilkes Classic MVP honors. He was joined on the GWC All-Tournament Team by senior guard Lawrence Borha, who scored nine against Morgan State in addition to his 19 vs. Ole Miss on Friday and 12 in the opening round against Green Bay.
Junior forward Kim Tillie added a season-high 10 points for Utah, while sophomore guard Carlon Brown tied a career-high with six assists for the second straight night. The Runnin' Utes hit for 54.2% from the field (26-48), while holding Morgan State to just 28.3% shooting (15-53). Utah also outrebounded the Bears, 36-26.
The only Morgan State player to hit double-digits was Kevin Thompson, who scored 14 points and eight rebounds for the Bears. Utah held the Bears' top three scorers completely in check, as Reggie Holmes (12.3), Marquise Kately (10.8 ppg) and Rogers Barnes (9.5 ppg) combined for just seven points on 2-of-19 from the field.
The Glenn Wilkes Classic championship hardware marks the first preseason tournament the Utes have won in more than 30 years.
Utah will now have six days before its next game. The Utes now face another road test at Missouri State Friday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. CT.
