SALT LAKE CITY - Dallin Bachynski finished with career highs in points (22) and rebounds (16) as Utah won its first game in the Utah Thanksgiving Tournament this evening, 57-46 over Idaho State. The sophomore has recorded double-doubles in both Runnin' Ute wins this year.
Bachynski scored Utah's first six points as the Utes gained an early advantage by hitting four of their first five shots from the floor. Utah benefited from a six-point possession when Martin and Dean were fouled on consecutive three-point field goals to build a 15-9 advantage.
ISU fought back with an 8-2 run to force the first tie of the contest at 17. The visitors then used a 7-0 run take a 24-20 lead. A Bachynski bucket eventually snapped a six-minute Utah drought and brought the Utes within two. Despite the sophomore matching his career-high in the first half with 11 points, Utah trailed by seven heading into the lockers. After hitting five of their first eight shots, the Utes struggled offensively and made three of their final 17 tries in the half, closing at 32 percent.
The Bengals opened up a nine-point margin to start the second stanza but Utah rallied and eventually went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead on a three-pointer by Dean, 34-33.
The Utes would take over from that point with a 13-1 run that eventually gave them a 52-38 lead with at 7:19 on the clock. After the Bengals opened the half with a bucket, until the 5:21 mark, Utah outscored their opponents 32-7.
Utah went on to earn the double-digit win thanks in large part to its defense during the final 20 minutes. The Utes limited Idaho State to 19 percent shooting in the second half and kept the Bengals scoreless beyond the arc (0-9).
In the first game of Utah's Thanksgiving Tournament, Central Michigan (2-1) topped Wright State (3-1) by a 59-55 score, handing the Raiders their first defeat of the season. Kyle Randall led CMU with 13 points, while John Simons grabbed a team-high eight boards. Wright State was paced by Dixon Miles' game-high 16 points, while AJ Pacher collected a game-high nine rebounds.
The Runnin' Utes continue play at the Utah Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday at 5 p.m. MT against Central Michigan. The contest will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. That game will be followed by Wright State vs. Idaho State at 7:45 p.m.
