Kerry Rupp is in his third season as an assistant coach at Utah. Rupp joined the Ute staff after a successful 24-year career as a high school coach in Utah. Rupp oversees the scouting of opponents and self-scouting, and coordinates underclass recruiting.
Before joining the Utah staff in August of 2001, Rupp had coached boys' basketball at Salt Lake City's East High School since 1986. He was promoted from assistant to head coach in 1990 and was also the school's athletics director 1992-99. Under his direction as head coach, the Leopards boys' basketball team won four region championships and played in two state title games.
Before moving to East High School, Rupp was the head boys' basketball coach at Uintah (1978-79) and Murray (1979-82) high schools. He was also an assistant football coach at East, Uintah and South high schools. Rupp was named Coach of the Year by the Utah High School Activities Association in 1999.
Rupp played basketball two years at Utah State University before transferring to Southern Utah University, where he graduated in 1977 with a degree in physical education. He was named the Thunderbirds' team MVP as a senior, and earned all-district and all-conference honors.
A graduate of Cyprus High School in 1972, Rupp was an All-American in basketball and an all-state performer in both football and basketball. In all, he won 10 varsity letters. Rupp was also an Eagle Scout.
Rupp has been involved in basketball on several levels. He coached the Utah All-Stars against the Adidas National Team in 1995 and was a coach in the Utah High School 4A All-Stars vs. 5A All-Stars basketball game in both 1996 and '97. He was the NBA's Utah Jazz Summer League (currently Rocky Mountain Review) coordinator when it was held at East High School in 1993 and was a part of the Seattle Supersonics summer league staff during the Rocky Mountain Review in 1996.
Before joining the Runnin' Ute staff, Rupp worked numerous basketball camps, including the Rick Majerus Big Man-Guard Camp. He was also the director of the Karl Malone Basketball Camp and co-executive director of the Karl Malone Foundation for Kids.
Rupp, 49, and his wife Lori, the director of the U. of U. Crimson Line dance and drill team, have five daughters: Allie Wiseman (29), Lindsey (27), Shelby (25), Billie (19) and Randie (14); and three grandchildren.
