Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg watches as the Utes hold an intrasquad scrimmage.
Sept. 25, 2013
As the Utah baseball team continues with fall practice, Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg is pleased with what he has seen through the early practices.
"It's still early, but the guys are working very hard," Kinneberg said. "We have a big weekend with Dixie State coming up that will give us a gauge as to where we are at. We still have another month of practice to really get a true feel for where our team sits.
"The whole sophomore group who played as freshmen last year have come back as different players. They look like upperclassmen and are acting like upperclassmen and playing like upperclassmen. I am really impressed with them. Our pitching has looked outstanding and I am really excited about that group. We have to stay healthy and continue developing there."
The sophomore class includes catcher AJ Young, outfielder Wyler Smith, pitcher Dalton Carroll, third baseman Dallas Carroll, pitcher and outfielder Bret Helton, shortstop Cody Scaggari and second baseman Kody Davis. The pitching staff is led by honorable mention all-Pac-12 selection Mitch Watrous, and key returners on the mound include Zach Adams, Tanner Banks, Josh Chapman, Luke West and Nick Green.
The Utes will play Dixie State in a fall exhibition game on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1:00 p.m. MT at Spring Mobile Ballpark. Entry is free and fans are welcome to bring food (concessions will not be open).
Fans are welcome to attend intrasquad scrimmages throughout the fall at Ute Field.
