SALT LAKE CITY -- Mother nature washed out Monday's baseball doubleheader between the University of Utah and Southern Utah University. The Utes were trailing 7-3 in the fourth inning, when conditions became unplayable.

Utah had jumped on top of Southern Utah 3-0 after the first inning. Ryan Khoury drew a one-out walk and later scored on a pair of Thunderbird errors, when Joe Mozeleski's ground ball was misplayed. Jay Brossman then ripped a Tyson Olson offering over the left-field wall, plating Mozeleski in front of him. The Brossman homer put the Utes up 3-0.

Southern Utah scored six in the top of the third. The big blow came on Mike Martin's three-run home run to right field off Utah starter Josh Madsen. The Thunderbirds took a 7-3 lead in the fourth off Ute reliever Brian Lane. SUU loaded the bases with nobody out against Lane, who then limited the damage to just one run.

As the Utes were coming to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, play was stopped. After a 30-minute rain delay, conditions were deemed unplayable. No make-up date has been announced. Utah and Southern Utah were not scheduled to face one another again this season.

The Utes will be in action again Friday, opening a three-game Mountain West Conference series with New Mexico at Franklin Covey Field. Games are slated for 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
