The Utes have won four of their last seven. St. Mary's enters the series with a 12-10 mark and lost two of three to Southern Utah last weekend in Henderson, Nev.
Utah was 19-36 overall in 2005. The Utes were fifth at 10-20 in the MWC.
Utah Balls & Strikes
This series marks the second of four trips to California for Utah this season.
Utah and St. Mary's haven't met on the diamond since 1995. The Gaels swept that series in Moraga, Calif. by tallies of 5-1, 24-1 and 5-4. That series is the only one on record. Utah's batters are reaching base at a .497 clip when leading off an inning.
At .299, Utah is the No. 2 team in the Mountain West in batting average. The utes have improved their pitching as of late. Utah is now No. 3 in the MWC with a 4.80 ERA.
Ryan's Rippin' It
Senior shortstop Ryan Khoury (West Jordan, Utah) is Utah's top hitter so far this season. He's also tops among hitters in the Mountain West on the young season.
Khoury is batting .405 to lead Utah and rank No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference.
Khoury ranks second on the team with 15 runs batted-in. He leads the team with a .527 on-base percentage and has a team-high seven stolen bases.
Improved Pitching
Utah started the season ranked near the bottom of nearly every pitching category in the Mountain West Conference.
Over the past few weeks, the Ute hurlers have improved their numbers. Utah now ranks No. 3 in the league in earned-run average, opposing batting average, runs allowed, walks allowed doubles allowed and triples allowed. Ute pitchers have only allowed eight home runs, tied for first in the conference.
