The Utah baseball team faces a tough challenge this weekend, playing a single game against Sam Houston State on Thursday, March 7, before traveling to No. 1 Texas A&M for a three-game series.
The Utes are coming off a 3-1 weekend at Cal State Bakersfield.
"We have made strides in a lot of areas," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Naturally, that is what we were looking for with our second series. We have improved on the mound and we really improved at the plate this week. Rick Cornu has had an outstanding two weeks.
"With each game we want to get better and have done that so far."
Scouting Sam Houston State
Sam Houston is 6-3 after going 1-4 at the Bearkat Baseball Classic this past weekend. On offense, shortstop Jon Reed is hitting .435, third baseman Seth Hammock has a .410 average and first baseman/outfielder Nick Zaleski is batting .355.
The Bearkat's starting pitcher is unknown at press time.
The Bearkats play No. 9 Rice on Tuesday, March 3, before playing the Utes on Thursday.
Kinneberg on Sam Houston State: "They are one of the best programs in the Southland Conference since Coach Johnson got there. They have very good athletes and will be very well coached."
Scouting Texas A&M
The No. 4 Aggies are 7-2 on the year, and are coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Houston College Classic. Among the wins was a 9-2 victory over No. 5 UC Irvine.
Texas A&M is led offensively by sophomore third baseman Caleb Shofner, who is hitting .542 with seven RBI, and junior outfielder Dylan Petrich (.500, 7 RBI). As a squad, the Aggies are hitting .286 with 10 home runs and 14 stolen bases, and are averaging 7.9 runs per game.
Texas A&M's projected starting pitchers are LHP Brooks Raley, RHP Alex Wilson and RHP Barret Loux.
Kinneberg on A&M: "We are going up against one of the best teams and programs in the country. It is such a great experience for us to play there and I hope the team comes away that much better and that much more prepared for conference play."
