2009 Utah Baseball Season Preview
The Utah baseball team opens the season with a four-game series at Loyola Marymount. The Utes open the series on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. (PT). The squads play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. before closing out the series on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.
"We need to get outside and play," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "It has been a long six weeks of working and the guys are ready to start competing.
Scouting Loyola Marymount
LMU is coming off a 23-32 season, including a 7-14 record with a seventh-place finish in the West Coast Conference.
The Lions are led by Ryan Wheeler, who was a 2008 All-WCC selection and is on the 2009 Wallace watch list. He hit .345 last year with 45 RBI, 20 doubles and a .542 slugging percentage. Angelo Songco was also a 2008 All-WCC pick with a .356 batting average and 15 home runs, 48 RBI and a .681 slugging percentage.
LMU lost its three best pitchers, but returns sophomore Martin Viramontes and senior Ernie Cho. Viramontes went 3-6 with a 6.26 ERA and 55 strikeouts while Cho was 1-1 with a 4.53 ERA.
Head coach Jason Gill is in his first season at LMU.
Kinneberg on LMU: "They are going to be way ahead of us because they have been outside and they will be ready to play. They have always had a quality program and they have a new coach who is very good as well, so I expect to have our hands full for all four games."
