BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Utah baseball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday, falling to UC Santa Barbara 6-2 in game one before losing to CSU Bakersfield, 7-5.
In game one, UC Santa Barbara took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after Lance Roenicke and Brandon Trinkwon led off the inning with singles. The Gauchos added a run in the sixth after Trinkwon tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
The Utes scored their first run of the game in the seventh inning after leadoff singles from Cory Hunt and Parker Morin before Trey Nielsen sent in Hunt on a sacrifice fly, cutting UCSB's lead to 3-1.
UCSB took control of the game with three insurance runs in the eighth inning with help from a two-run single off the bat of Greg Mahle.
Utah made a rally in the ninth inning after James Brooks led off the inning with a double to right field, following by a walk to Hunt and a single off the bat of Morin to load the bases. After two fly ball outs, Jo Jo Sharrar gave the Utes a run with a single through the right side before Gavin Green struck out to end the game.
Morin led Utah at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. On the mound, Joe Pond pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts. Nick Green threw the final two innings, allowing two runs on one hit with a strikeout.
In game two, CSU Bakersfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Roadrunners got their first three batters on base after two were hit by pitches, plus a walk. Cael Brockmeyer had a two-RBI triple in the inning for CSUB. CSU Bakersfield added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Stuart Smith RBI single after Kevin Younger led off the inning with a double.
CSUB increased its lead in the bottom of the seventh, adding two runs to take a 7-3 lead.
Utah again rallied in the ninth inning to score two runs, with Sharrar leading off the inning with a single and pinch-runner Tyler Relf scored on Nielsen's single up the middle. Gavin Green, who walked, added another run with a sacrifice fly from Hunt. Brooks doubled to put two runners on base with two outs before Connor Eppard grounded out to end the game.
Eppard went 3-for-5 to lead Utah at the plate, while Nielsen had two hits. Utah used three pitchers, with starter Ben Mordini going one inning and allowing four runs in the loss. Mordini was followed by five innings from Josh Chapman (who allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts) and two innings from Blake Golding (one run, two hits).
The Utes close out their season on Sunday against CSU Bakersfield at noon PT.
