FORT WORTH - The Utah baseball team ensured that there will be a new Mountain West Conference Tournament champion on Friday afternoon, defeating TCU, 6-4.
Utah turns around to play San Diego State in the championship game at 7:00 p.m. (CT). Jordan Whatcott (4-2, 3.74 ERA) will face off with Tyler Lavine (7-1, 3.39 ERA) on the mound.
The game will be televised live on The Mtn., while audio and live stats are available at UtahUtes.com.
Against TCU, Devin Walker gave the Utes a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run home run. Utah took a 6-0 lead with a four-run fifth inning. Tyler Yagi, C.J. Cron and Walker each had RBI hits in the inning for the Utes.
TCU scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 6-3. The Horned Frogs threatened in the ninth inning, with Jason Coats, Corey Steglish and Taylor Featherston all recording hits in the inning to add a run to the board before Whatcott was brought in to retire the final two batters to pick up a save.
On the mound, Utah starter Bryn Card (5-2) had TCU off-balance the entire game. He went five and two-third innings and allowed seven hits and three runs. Greg Krause pitched 2.2 innings with two strikeouts, allowing one run.
"Our guys are locked in right now and we've played really well," Utah coach Bill Kinneberg said. "For them to come in here with some confidence, they are doing that.
"(Bryn Card) held them off with his changeup and changing bat speeds. He did a tremendous job and got us where we need to be."
The Horned Frogs had won the last three MWC titles. The Utes upset TCU twice during the tournament.
