FORT WORTH - TCU took an early lead and a late Utah comeback fell short as the Ute baseball team fell to the Horned Frogs, 8-5, on Saturday, May 14.
After TCU put up seven runs in the second inning, Utah slowly chipped away at the score. Utah got on the board in the fourth inning after Shaun Cooper led off the inning with a single, and he would eventually score on Cody Guymon's ground out. TCU countered with a run in the bottom of the inning after singles from Joe Weik and Taylor Featherston sent a run in to put the score at 8-1.
Ute reliever Stephen Streich, who entered in the third inning, allowed just the one fourth inning run for the remainder of the contest, holding off the Frogs and giving Utah an opportunity to get back in the game.
The Utes made a big rally in the ninth inning with two outs. Jo Jo Sharrar, Gavin Green and James Brooks hit three-straight singles, with Brooks driving in Sharrar. TCU brought in a new pitcher, but Michael Beltran kept things going for the Utes with a single to load the bases for Cron, who represented the tying run. TCU chose to intentionally walk Cron, taking the one run before reliever Trent Appleby forced Cooper to ground out and end the game.
Streich allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Starter Brock Duke took the loss after pitching the first two innings. He falls to 6-2 on the season.
Utah and TCU play the rubber match of the series on Sunday, May 15, beginning at noon MT.
