FORT WORTH, Texas - Early scoring by No. 15 TCU doomed the Utah baseball team, as the Utes fell 4-3 to the Horned Frogs on Sunday, May 10, in Fort Worth.
The Utes played from behind most of the game as TCU took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. With two runners on base Aaron Schultz singled up the middle to send Jason Coats across the plate. Corey Steglich laid down a squeeze bunt but reached on an errant throw which allowed two runs to score. In the third inning, Aaron Schultz's RBI single scored Chris Ellington and pushed the Horned Frogs lead to 4-0.
Utah scattered its three runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Austin Jones led off the fifth inning with a double and moved to third on an error, scoring with Gavin Green's ground out.
Another lead off double from Michael Beltran in the sixth also led to a run. Beltran went to second with a ground out from Nick Kuroczko before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly from C.J. Cron.
Cooper Blanc led off the seventh inning with a single, swimming second base. Green hit an infield single to move Blanc to third before he scored on Corey Shimada's single through the left side to cut the lead to one, 4-3.
Although the Utes put runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, they could not push another run across the plate.
Shimada and Jones each had two hits for the Utes.
Ute starter Jordan Whatcott allowed eight hits and three earned runs over 6.1 innings and picked up just his second loss of the season to go to 4-2 on the year. He struck out two. Bryn Card faced one batter in the seventh before Greg Krause entered to close out the game, giving up just one hit over 1.1 innings.
