SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team scored five runs in the first inning against Southern Utah University Tuesday afternoon at Ute Field. That first-inning outburst was enough to lead the Utes to a non-conference win over the Thunderbirds, 8-3.
Utah center fielder Nate Burnham started things off with a leadoff home run to left field in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Corey Shimada walked and first baseman Jay Brossman singled. After a strikeout by left fielder Dustin Hennis, John Welsh's high chopper went for an infield hit and scored Shimada to make it 2-0. Brossman later scored on a balk by SUU starting pitcher Matt Wilson for the third run. Welsh came around on a single from the bat of designated hitter Bret Baldwin to make it 4-0. Baldwin rounded out the first-inning fireworks when he scored on an RBI single by third baseman Erich Kemp.
Southern Utah scored one run against Ute starter Chad Cullers in the second inning. The Thunderbirds used a pair of base hits and a sacrifice fly to light the scoreboard. Cullers tossed two innings, allowing one run on two hits. He improved to 4-4, picking up the win by rule, since Utah prearranged to use three or more pitchers.
SUU pulled within two runs in the fourth. Ute reliever Greg Krause was welcomed to the game with back-to-back doubles by the Thunderbirds' Mac Nelson and Joe Wright. Both Nelson and Wright scored in the inning to make it 5-3. But that's all Southern Utah would be able to manage against seven Ute hurlers.
Utah relievers Krause, Geoff Wolfgramm, Lucas Trinnaman, Bennett Askew and Brett Bruneel retired 15 of the last 19 Thunderbird hitters, holding SUU at bay. Wilson (1-6) suffered the loss for Southern Utah. He allowed five runs on seven hits over two innings of work.
Burnham, Brossman, Welsh, Baldwin, Kemp and Mitchell all had two hits for the Utes. As a team, Utah tallied 15 hits. Every Utah starter had at least one base hit.
Utah is back in Mountain West Conference play this weekend in Las Vegas. The Utes face off with UNLV Friday-Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. First pitch for Friday's contest is slated for 6:30 p.m. PDT.
