The scoring went back-and-forth early in the contest as both teams had multiple run innings to put the score tied, 7-7, by the fifth.
Washington State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Utes took advantage of a pair of Cougar errors to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead. A five-run, three-hit third inning put Washington State on top again before the Utes tied it at 4-4 with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Shimada walked to lead off the inning and scored with Yagi's first triple of the season, hit to right field. Yagi scored with Kuroczko grounding out.
Each team scored three runs in the fourth inning to leave the score tied, 7-7. Greg Lagreid had a two-RBI double in the inning for the Cougars.
