OGDEN, Utah - The Utah baseball team dropped its second straight extra-inning contest, falling to New Mexico, 7-6, in 10 innings on Friday, April 10.

A flurry of late inning scoring saw New Mexico score two runs to take the lead in the top of the ninth. With Utah leading 4-3, the Lobos put two on base setting up Max Willett's two RBI double to left center to give UNM a 5-4 lead.

The Utes sent the game into overtime with a run in the bottom of the inning, tying the score at 5-5. Michael Beltran reached base on an error, and would score after Tyler Yagi's single following the left fielder's bobble of the hit.

New Mexico came back in the top of the 10th, taking a 7-5 lead with a two RBI double with two outs from Kevin Atkinson. Although Utah's Austin Jones cut the lead to 7-6 with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, the Utes left two on base as the game ended.

The Lobos took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Brian Cavazos-Galvez hit a solo home run to center field.

Utah took the lead in the third inning, 2-1, with help from a pair of doubles by Nick Kuroczko and Yagi. Yagi hit a double that was just fair inside the left field line. Kuroczko's bloop hit that was just fair inside the right field line went for two bases and sent Yagi in to score. C.J. Cron drove in Kuroczko with a single.

New Mexico sent two across the plate in the fifth inning with Mike Brownstein and Willett each doubling in the inning to score a pair of runs, pushing the Lobos back in the lead, 3-2.

The Utes pulled ahead in the seventh, 4-3, scoring twice. With the bases loaded with Devin Walker, Corey Shimada and Yagi with two outs, Rick Cornu singled to center field to send Walker and Shimada across the plate.

 

 

Cron led Utah with a 4-for-4 performance while Yagi was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Stephen Streich earned the loss after entering the contest in the ninth. Andrew Wilding pitched seven innings as the starter, allowing three runs with a strikeout. Tyler Andersen saw action on the mound in the eighth while Joe Pond entered in the eighth and pitched into the ninth.

Daniel Grubbs picked up the win for New Mexico, pitching most of the final two innings. John Hesketh went 6.2 innings in the start, allowing three runs. Willett went 3-for-4 with three RBI on the night.

Utah and New Mexico wrap up their series in Ogden on Saturday, April 11, at 1:00 p.m.
