Four-error fifth proves costly for Utes.
April 4, 2008
SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team committed four miscues in the fifth inning, which led to four unearned runs and the win for Utah Valley here at Franklin Covey Field this evening. UV went on to bag the 4-2 non-league win tonight.
The Utes (11-14 overall) scored one run in the first inning on Austin Jones' RBI double, and they held on to the 1-0 lead after four innings.
But, UV pounced all over four Utah errors in plating four unearned runs in the fifth. Jones countered in the bottom of the fifth with his sac-fly RBI, and the Crimson and White tried to respond again in the sixth. They loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but they couldn't capitalize on the situation. Cody Guymon and Jesse Shriner hit back-to-back infield grounders, allowing the Wolverines to escape the sixth inning unscathed.
Brian Budrow got the nod on the mound, and is saddled with the hard-luck loss. The four runs were scored on his watch, even though they were all unearned. He allowed eight hits and fanned two Wolverine batters in falling to 4-2 on the year.
UV out-hit the Utes, 9-6, as Shriner was the only Utah player with a pair of hits tonight (2-for-5).
The Wolverine's Aaron Brady went the distance against Utah in upping his season tally to 2-2 on the year. Jace Brinkerhoff and Jake Rickenbach both led the team at the plate as they each went 2-for-4 tonight.
The same two teams wrap up this four-game series tomorrow afternoon in Orem. First pitch at Brent Brown Park is set for 1 p.m.
