MORAGA, Calif. - The Utah baseball team closed out its four-game series against Saint Mary's with a 3-1 win on Monday afternoon.
Chase Rezac made the start on the mound for Utah, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Dalton Carroll pitched the remaining 5 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Dalton Carroll picked up his first collegiate win, going to 1-1 on the year.
"We pitched extremely well," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Rezac was on a pitch count and we wanted to get him through the fourth, but we couldn't quite do it. Dalton pitched great for five innings."
At the plate, Tyler Yagi went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Trey Nielsen was 2-for-4.
The Utes scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning. Yagi and Nielsen each had hits in the inning while Dallas Carroll scored on a balk.
Saint Mary's looked to break through in the fourth as Rezac walked three-straight batters with two outs before Dalton Carroll came in to get a strikeout and get out of the inning. The Gaels would leave nine runners on base throughout the day.
The Utes increased their lead with a run in the seventh that started with a double from Nielsen before he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bret Helton. Yagi hit an RBI triple in the eighth inning to score Tyler Relf, who led off the inning with a walk.
