COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Utah baseball team earned its first shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over No. 4 Texas A&M on Saturday, March 7.

Jordan Whatcott (2-0) went six innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts for his second win of the year. Stephen Streich allowed two hits in two innings in relief while Robert Chimpky picked up his second save of the year after entering the game in the ninth.

Corey Shimada scored both of Utah's two runs and went 2-for-4 on the day, while Austin Jones earned an RBI on each run scored.

"This was a great win for us," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We managed to get outs at critical times and our defense played very well. Our two relief pitchers also did great and Jordan battled through some control problems. To get a shutout in this environment against this team means we are doing something right, although we did walk too many batters."

Both teams left several runners on base throughout the game. Utah (6-5) had nine left on while Texas A&M (10-3) had 10.

The Utes broke a scoreless game in the sixth inning. Shimada reached on a dropped fly ball by the center field and advanced to second on the play. C.J. Cron and Jones had back-to-back singles, with Cron moving Shimada to second and Jones sending him across the plate.

Shimada led off the eighth inning with a bunt to first base. He stole both second and third bases, scoring when Jones reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to put the Utes up 2-0.

The Aggies were shut out for just the second time this season. Alex Wilson (1-2) had the loss on the mound.

The two teams play the final game of the series on Sunday, March 8, at 1 p.m. (CT). Live stats and video are available on UtahUtes.com.
