DAVIS, Calif - The University of Utah baseball team couldn't rebound from an eight-run second inning by UC Davis as the Aggies went on to topple the Utes, 12-4.
Utah (0-4 overall) belted out nine hits in the loss, but that wasn't enough to counter the 16-hit effort by the Aggies (3-2 overall). Cooper Blanc was the lone bright spot for the Utes. He went 3-for-4 at the plate, and tallied a two-RBI double in the fourth inning. Utah trailed, 8-2, after the fourth inning.
Utah's other six hits came from six different bats.
Blanc was also a part of the two-run seventh inning. He hit a one-out single to left field, and scored when Fred Ferguson hit his first homer of the year on the very next at-bat. However, the two scores in the seventh trimmed the Utes' deficit to 11-4. UCD went on to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 12-4.
Blanc's double in the fourth scored Cody Guymon and Dustin Hennis. Guymon led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch, and Hennis hit a one-out single to right field. That set the table for Blanc's two-run double with runners on first and second.
Everything UCD needed, it got in the bottom of the second. Kyle Mihaylo got the Aggies on the board with an RBI single, and that was flowed by Matt Dempsey's two-RBI single. Up 3-0, most of the damage came from Jake Jerrerries' bat. He hit an inside-the-park grand slam, upping the home team's lead to 7-0. One last RBI single gave UCD the 8-0 lead.
A three-run fifth gave UCD the 11-2 lead, and Utah countered with its two runs in the seventh. But, the Aggies responded in the bottom of the seventh when Ty Kelly recorded an RBI single.
Stephen Fife got the start on the mound, and is saddled with the loss. He only went 1.1 innings, surrendering eight runs, and giving up seven hits. Fife falls to 0-1 on the year.
The same two teams will battle in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch at UC Davis is set for 11 a.m. (PT).
