SURPRISE, Ariz. - Cory Hunt's RBI single in the 15th inning lifted the Utah baseball team to a 5-4 win over 10th-ranked Indiana on Saturday evening.
The game was tied at 3-3 after regulation. Utah loaded the bases in the 10th inning on two walks and a hit by pitch but Indiana ended the inning with a strikeout. Indiana took advantage of two errors to score a run in the top of the 13th inning and take the lead, but Hunt came through with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning to score Max Schuman, who walked to lead off the inning.
Indiana hit a leadoff triple in the 14th. Utah reliever Nick Green got a ground out to third, strikeout and fly out to end the inning. Kody Davis hit an infield single and stole second with no outs in the bottom of the 14th, but a pair of strikeouts and a fly out ended the threat.
After a 1-2-3 inning for the Hoosiers in the top of the 15th, Schuman walked to lead off the inning for the Utes and moved over on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Cody Scaggari. Bret Helton flied out to right field and Schuman advanced to third when the right fielder overthrew second base, setting up Hunt's game-winning heroics.
"Banks, Adams, Green and Chapman were really the story of tonight's game," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Nick was spectacular through seven innings, and Tanner was also great. That was a really good team that we beat tonight, and this is a big win for us. They were a World Series team last year and have virtually everyone back. I am a little disappointed that we had our leadoff guy on almost every inning from the ninth to the 15th inning, and it took until the 15th to get that key hit, but on the bright side, we had a lot of chances with runners in scoring position, and we will get better at that. Cory came through in the late innings with two clutch hits. He hit both of those balls the way you are supposed to hit them - he got good swings on them and hit the ball really well."
Davis went 3-for-4 at the plate while Hunt was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Indiana looked to strike early but left two runners on in the first inning. Utah got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Wyler Smith singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Konnor Armijo walked and both runners moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Scaggari. Simmons grounded out to score Smith.
Indiana tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning after a leadoff hit by pitch led to an RBI single with two outs.
Utah stranded two on in the fifth and Indiana took a 2-1 lead in the seventh off a walk and an RBI triple. The Utes came back in the bottom of the seventh to score two runs and retake the lead, 3-2. Scaggari was hit by the pitch, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a two-base throwing error on a ground out. Davis singled with two outs leading to an RBI single from AJ Young to score pinch runner Zach Jones before the Hoosiers got a strikeout to end the inning and leave two on base.
Indiana tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth after a pair of leadoff singles led to a run on a ground out.
