OGDEN, Utah - The University of Utah cross country teams finished the Weber State Invitational on Sat., Sept. 4. The meet featured athletes from Utah, Weber State and Utah Valley State College. Utah's teams captured second-place finishes in both races.
Senior Delfino Arevalo led the men's team, winning the four-mile race (20:34). Matt Hansen finished eighth followed by Colby Frazier at tenth, and Kurt Michels at 15th. Freshmen Vance Twitchell was impressive while running unattached, finishing 13th overall (21:37).
On the women's side, junior Elise Greenwood-Bahr led the team with an impressive second-place finish in the three mile race (15:21). Nellie Hammons finished fourth followed by Charity Vernon at 11th, Kristen Taylor at 12th and Jenny Gustavson at 16th. Sophomore Jennie Haertel had a great race running unattached, and finishing seventh overall. If counted, her score would've pulled the Utes within two points of the first-place Wildcats.
"I was very impressed with the results," states Head Coach Brian Appell. "Our unattached runners did a great job, and will run attached at the next meet. We trained throughout the race, so the entire squad was very tired. Overall, the team is coming along fine."
