SALT LAKE CITY--Utah track members Andrea Davidson and Nellie Hammons have been named Academic All-District VIII. Davidson received first-team honors and will advance to the national ballot, while Hammons was cited as second team.
Davidson transferred to Utah last fall after a very successful career at Ricks College in Idaho. She competed in both cross country and track for the U. This year, she finished fifth in 800-meter run at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships and eighth at the outdoor championships. She currently ranks second on Utah's all-time indoor list in the 800 meters (2:12.97), seventh in the 200 (26.82), while being a member of the second-ranking distance-medley relay team (12:12.84).
In the classroom, the Farr West, Utah, native has maintained a 3.957 GPA as an elementary education major. She recently was honored with the Bud Jack Award, which is given to the top academic senior at Utah. She was a two-time academic all-conference award winner for cross country and a one-time winner for track, with another honor likely around the corner. Davidson also was named a MWC Scholar-Athlete.
Hammons is a junior in cross country and a senior in track in field. She was Utah's first finisher at the 2003 MWC Cross Country Championships, coming in at 16th. Her best event is the 800, which she holds the school record for in both indoor and outdoor. During the 2004 indoor season, she lost only two races in the 800 and took home the league title. She advanced to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, but failed to make the finals. Hammons also found success during the outdoor season, where she recently set a new school record in the 800 at the NCAA West Regional to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held next week.
The South Weber, Utah, native has compiled a 3.487 GPA as an English major. She has been named academic all-conference three times and was a member of the 2003 NCAA Division I Track Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
