SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women’s track and field team gets the 2013 outdoor season underway on Friday at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. PT with the 4x100 relays, which will be at the Aztrack Sports Deck.
“As we move to the outdoor season we want to continue to see improvement and growth,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “Outdoor track brings a new set of elements that our women have to deal with. They have to understand which of those elements they can control and those they cannot. It’s not as simple as just we are now running, jumping and throwing outside. It involves a different approach in several events and how quickly we can make those adjustments will determine how well we perform early in the season.”
The throws group has high expectations for the outdoor season. Sophomore Kaitlin Urmston broke the school record in the javelin last season and is looking to improve on that mark to qualify for the NCAA Championships. In their final year, seniors Anneli Stahl and Cynthia Sanchez also have hopes to break the school records in the hammer throw and shot put.
Returning from an injury that plagued the indoor season, senior Stephanie Jolley is ready to compete again in the 400m hurdles. Jolley had a breakout year in 2012 and looks to continue that success heading into this outdoor season. After going through a struggling indoor season, senior Angela Kaplar also looks to get back to form in the outdoor competitions.
