PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Utah track and field team finished the final day of competition at the NCAA West Regional Meet on Saturday, May 31. The West region consists of 42 Division l institutions from the following states: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
Competing for Utah were Nellie Hammons, Vanessa Mortensen, Katie Decker and Jeff Davidson. Hammons had another great meet finishing fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.47, which qualified her for the national meet in Sacramento. Mortensen, only a freshman, finished an impressive ninth place in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.81 meters. Decker placed 16th in the high jump with a height of 1.66 meters and Davidson finished 30th in the steeplechase with a time of 9:56.18.
"We are very excited that Nellie qualified today," states Head Cross Country Coach Brian Appell. "She should be able to improve over the next few weeks and be ready for the championship meet."
"The first ever West Regional meet was a great experience for our athletes," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "The conditions we're awesome and the meet was ran very well. This will give the team something to look forward for next year."
