SALT LAKE CITY - Chelsea Shapard set a regional qualifying mark in the 800-meter run, leading a contingent of Utes who had a solid day at the Utah Twilight, held on Thursday, May 8, at East High School.
Shapard finished second in the event in 2:09.38.
The Utes came away with two event winners. Both women set personal bests and were close to regional qualifying times. Chelsey Kaplar's win the 400-meter hurdles was in 1:01.01. Haley McAllister's leap of 19'5.5" long jump was also first.
"It was great to compete in front of our home fans and our home track," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Our kids responded, and we head into our conference meet with momentum.
"I want to thank all the Ute supporters who attended today. I also want to thank all the volunteers who helped out at the meet, as well as the administration that supported the meet and the staff who helped at the meet. I am proud of our team and proud of our entire department for a job well done."
Nearly all of Utah's throwers competed, with Chasity Toilolo leading the charge with a second-place finish in the shot put (43'8.5"). Josefin Berg finished third in the hammer throw (184'9"). Sarah Grimm also had a top-five finish in the hammer, placing fifth in 165'10". Berg was also ninth in the shot (36'5.75") while Toilolo finished seventh in the discus (141'4").
Laryssa Simpson was third in the pole vault (11'7.75") and Sarah McFee finished second in the triple jump (36'2.25"). Mandi Witherspoon cleared 5'3" in the high jump to finish fourth. Alyssa Abbott ran fifth in the 800 meters in 2:16.94.

Liza Whitehead placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.62). Whitney Wellington was fifth in the 400-meter dash in 57.92. Breanna Freestone led the Utes in the javelin throw, placing seventh with a toss of 114'5". Ashley Patterson finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.49.
The Utes will use the weekend to rest up before traveling to TCU for the Mountain West Conference meet, which begins on Wednesday, May 14.
