March 12, 2004

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Senior Nellie Hammons finished competition for the first day of the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, March 12. Hammons qualified to compete in the 800m by setting a 2:06.29 mark at the Alex Wilson Invite at Notre Dame. Hammons failed to qualify for the finals by finishing 13th overall (2:08.52) in the preliminary race.

Hammons caps off a terrific season as one of the most dominating 800m runners in the conference. She won all but one race and posted a career-best 2:06.29 at the Alex Wilson invite. Her time ranked 12th out of 16 athletes competing in the national 800m championships and was a new University of Utah school record. Today's race marked her second appearance in a NCAA Championship meet. Hammons qualified last season in the 800m during the outdoor season.

Competition will continue on Saturday, March 13 with senior Katie Decker competing the high jump. Decker qualified by jumping 5' 11 1/4" earlier this season.
