POCATELLO, Idaho- The University of Utah women's track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition with two event titles at the Mountain States Games. The Utes also dominated the weight throw by earning three of the top-five spots.
"We had a pretty good day," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Our team did very well in the weight throw and the top three were all very close to their personal records. Overall I was pleased with how we performed today and we are excited to compete tomorrow."
Trailing after the third leg, the Utah distance-medley relay made a great come back to win the event. In the third leg of the race, freshman Andrea Chavez clocked a lifetime-best split of 2:16 before handing the baton to fellow freshman Susannah Hurst. On the final stretch of the race, Hurst trailed the leader by 100m before making up the ground to give the Utes a first-place time of 12:20.99.
In the weight throw, the Utes earned the three of the top-five spots. Anneli Stahl finished the day with a throw of 57-6.50 for second place. Nikkie Rudder posted a personal-best mark of 56-9.50 to earn third. Junior Cynthia Sanchez finished fourth with a throw of 54-9.25, respectively for the Utes.
