POCATELLO, Idaho- Competing in the only event of the day, the University of Utah throwers took command of the shot put at the Mountain States Games. Destanae Howerton-Davis led the surge capturing the event title for the Utes.
"I was happy to see the core group of throwers perform well today," Utah assistant coach Tapio Kuusela said. "We are getting better just in time as the season gets into the core of the schedule and things begin to really count. I expect that our group will have a good day tomorrow in weight throw."
Howerton-Davis led the field today for the Utes. Posting three throws that would have all captured first place, her top throw of 45-10.75 feet sealed the event title. Finishing second overall was Candus Ford with a mark of 45-2.25 feet. Continuing recovery from elbow surgery, Alanna Nulph finished with a season-best mark of 42-8.25 feet for sixth.
Cynthia Sanchez was fourth for the team and eighth overall with a mark of 42-4.00 feet. Freshman Sosina Salima set a new personal-record throw of 41-5.75 feet for ninth as she continues to improve in every meet thus far this season. Amanda Pais also posted a personal-best with a mark of 39-1.25 feet finishing 12th for the Utes.
The throwers return to action at the Mountain States Games on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the weight throw. The rest of the team will be competing at the Bronco Classic in Nampa, Idaho beginning at 9 a.m.
