Jan. 20, 2004
THIS WEEK:
The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving team resumes competition on Thursday. The team will travel to Wyoming for a meet on Jan. 22, at 5:00 p.m. Following the meet with the Cowboys, Utah will go to Air Force for the meet on Jan. 24, at 1:00 p.m.
UTE NOTES:
Utah is unbeaten in both men's and women's conference competition. On the women's side Utah is 4-0 and alone in first place, while the men are 1-0 and tied with BYU for the top spot in the conference.
For the men, Utah has not beaten either Air Force or Wyoming since 1999. The women are looking to continue their conference winning streak.
SCOUTING WYOMING AND AIR FORCE:
The Wyoming women are 1-2, while the men are 0-1 in MWC competition. Last season, the Ute women beat Wyoming 133.5-103.5, while the men fell 125-106. Air Force heads into the weekend with a 1-2 conference record for the women and the men have yet to swim a conference meet. Last year, the Falcon women lost to Utah 130-106, while the Air Force men won 141-100.
LOOKING BACK AT NEW MEXICO AND COLORADO STATE:
On Jan. 16-17, the Ute women knocked off both New Mexico and Colorado State to run their record to 7-1 overall (4-0 MWC). Utah dominated the Lobos, winning 11 of 13 events on their way to the 146-90 victory. Leading the way for Utah was Amy Barefield and Marta Stepanczuk, each winning three events.
Against the Rams, Utah got off to an emotional start as the 200 medley relay team of Leah Jensen, Tessa Greegor, Kendall Smith and Melissa Young, won the event by .01 of a second, as their time of 1:48.34 proved enough. The Utes rolled from there winning their next four events in a 128-109 win.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Michael Litzinger:
"I really think that this weekend is about our men's team making a significant step in being MWC contenders. It is certainly their time to shine. The women are on a great roll and I am very proud of their effort. The key for them this weekend is to continue swimming with confidence, and rehearse racing in these dual meet situations."
